This Victorian sash window in a ‘two over two’ panel configuration is part of a series of double glazed wooden sash windows fitted into a yellow stock brick London home. The exact origin of the sash window design is unclear, but in England their use certainly dates back as far as the 17th century. The name ‘sash’ comes from the French word chassis, meaning frame. A counterweight and pulley system is concealed within the frame of the sash window, counterbalancing the weight of the heavy bottom panel and allowing it to slide upwards to open. Installed beneath an attractive red brick lintel, this double glazed Victorian sash window will keep the interior of the home secure and cosy.
